Git GUI for Linux

A Git GUI for Linux.

Nori for Linux ships as a .deb, an .rpm and an AppImage for x86-64. Its core is written in Rust and its window uses Tauri on the system’s WebKitGTK; only the AppImage carries its own copy, so it runs anywhere. Nori runs your distribution’s Git on the repositories you already have, free on public and private repositories, with no account.

What your system needs

x86-64, with Ubuntu 22.04 or Debian 12 and newer, or a current Fedora. The packages are built on Ubuntu 22.04, so they need glibc 2.35 or later. There is no ARM64 Linux build yet.

Git 2.36 or later, from your distribution. The .deb depends on git, libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 and libgtk-3-0 only, so apt installs what is missing. If your Git is too old, Nori says so and asks you to update it with your package manager.

Install it

PackageForSize, Nori 1.14.0
.debUbuntu, Debian and their derivativesabout 20 MB
.rpmFedora, openSUSE and their derivativesabout 20 MB
AppImageAny other distribution, without installingabout 95 MB, as it carries WebKitGTK and GTK
# Ubuntu, Debian
sudo apt install ./Nori_*_amd64.deb

# Fedora
sudo dnf install ./Nori-*.x86_64.rpm

# AppImage
chmod +x Nori_*_amd64.AppImage && ./Nori_*_amd64.AppImage

The packages install /usr/bin/nori and a desktop entry. Download Nori for Linux.

Updates

Nori checks once a day and offers each new version in Settings ▸ Updates; nothing installs until you choose to. A .deb or .rpm is updated through pkexec, else sudo. An AppImage is replaced in place, so keep it in a folder you can write to; otherwise Nori explains why it cannot update instead of failing. The updater accepts only a build signed for its version.

Linux habits it keeps

  • Git and its hooks get your login shell’s environment, so tools from Linuxbrew, ~/.local/bin, nvm or a proxy set in ~/.bashrc resolve as in a terminal, even when Nori starts from the desktop.
  • Ctrl takes the place of ⌘, and shortcuts that would need Ctrl+Alt use Alt+Shift, clear of GNOME’s own Ctrl+Alt+T and workspace keys.
  • Window controls in the GNOME style, and sharp text when the desktop scales it.
  • Open a file at its line in VS Code, Cursor, Zed, Sublime Text or a JetBrains IDE.
  • Licence and repository data stay in $XDG_DATA_HOME/Nori.
The same window on every system: tabs, sidebar, commit graph and Working copy panel. Drawn here as on the Mac; on Linux the window buttons sit on the right, in GNOME’s style.

The same Nori as on the Mac and Windows

The Linux build arrived with Nori 1.12.0 and follows the Mac app feature for feature. One licence covers two devices, on any mix of systems.

  • The commit graph, drag-and-drop merge, rebase and cherry-pick, and interactive rebase.
  • Staging by file, folder, hunk or single line, and the three-way merge conflict resolver.
  • Undo after a commit, a branch deletion, a stash drop or a discard, with 30 days of operations.
  • History search, blame, file history and the reflog.
  • Optional AI through the agent CLI you already use (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor), with no API key.
  • With Pro: GitHub pull request and GitLab merge request reviews, CI checks and issues. One licence covers two devices, whichever systems they run.

The figures on the comparison page were measured on a Mac; Linux has not been measured yet.

Other Git GUIs on Linux

Of the clients Nori compares itself with, GitKraken and Sublime Merge run on Linux. Tower, Fork, Sourcetree and GitHub Desktop list only Mac and Windows. Free and open source options such as git-cola and gitg are covered in the guide below.
